Gas

These instructions given below are on the assumption the burner has previously been commissioned successfully.

These guidelines are only for use by suitable qualified, competent persons with appropriate test equipment and industry knowledge.

The basics should be checked first:

  • Are the gas cocks of the installation open?
  • Are the fuses in order and current switched on?
  • Are the controls (room thermostat, boiler thermostat etc.) correctly adjusted?
  • Is the gas replay of the burner ready for start and not locked out?
  • Is the air supply to the burner sufficient?

Burner fails to start

Cause Remedy
No gas Check that all gas cocks are open
No voltage Check fuses, thermostats and electrical connections
The burner motor fails to start The thermal protection has locked out. Motor defective.
The gas replay is defective Replace

Burner motor is running but no ignition after the pre-purge time has elapsed

Cause Remedy
No voltage on the terminals Check the contact. Replace faulty reply.
The ignition electrodes in contact with each other or with earth Adjust
The porcelain of the electrodes is broken Replace the electrodes
The cable shoes have bad contact Improve the contact
The ignition cables are damaged Replace
The ignition transformer is damaged, no voltage on the secondary side Replace the transformer
The ignition cable and the ionisation cable have been transposed change

No flame establishment despite a trouble free start

Cause Remedy
The gas solenoid is defective Replace
The gas solenoid valve does not open despite its obtaining voltage Replace coil or the whole valve if necessary
No voltage to the solenoid valve Check the contact
No electrical connection through the air pressure switch Test the adjustment and the function of the air pressure switch
The starting load is not correctly adjusted Reduce or increase the gas supply, reduce the quantity of air
Gas relay is defective Replace
Air pressure switch incorrectly adjusted or defective Check the adjustment and readjust
No response as the cams of the servomotor are not correctly adjusted or out of position.  

The burner locks out after the safety time has elapsed in spite of flame establishment

Cause Remedy
No ionisation current or the UV-cell in wrong position Adjust the ionisation electrode and the UV cell examine cables and connections
The supervision part of the gas relay is defective Replace the relay
Voltage lower than 185V Contact the electricity authorities
The ignition electrodes are disturbing the ionisation current Adjust the ignition electrodes, repole the ignition transformer if necessary
Bad earthing Arrange for proper earthing
Phase and neutral transposed See wiring diagram and change

The burner locks out during pre-purge

Cause Remedy
The air switch is defective or incorrectly adjusted  
The starting load is not correctly adjusted Reduce or increase the gas supply. Reduce the quantity of air.
The gas pressure is too low Increase the pressure. Contact the gas supply company if necessary.

Condensation in boiler and chimney

Cause Remedy
The flow gas temperature is too low or the quantity of gas is not sufficient Increase the flue gas temperature by increasing the gas supply. Insulate the chimney

Pulsations at start

Cause Remedy
The ignition electrodes are wrongly adjusted Re-adjust
The gas pressure is too high Check and adjust by means of a pressure gauge and a pressure adjustment valve
The flue gas side is blocked Check the chimney flue

Pulsations during operation

Cause Remedy
The burner is not correctly adjusted Re-adjust
The burner is dirty Clean the burner
Defective chimney Check and change the dimensions if necessary

The burner is operating correctly but locking out now and then

Cause Remedy
The ionisation current is too low Check. Must be at least 4µA according to the relay manufacturer but should be 8-20µA
The UV cell is in a wrong position Adjust
Voltage drop at certain times Must not drop more than 15% of the rated current
Air pressure switch defective or incorrectly adjusted Contact the electricity authorities if necessary
Spark over in ignition electrodes Replace the electrodes
The ambient temperature of the gas relay is too high Heat insulate, max. 60°C
The ignition spark is too weak Check the transformer

Bad combustion

Cause Remedy
Bad draught conditions Check the chimney
The flue gas temperature is too high The boiler is overloaded. Reduce the quantity of gas
The CO² content is too low Check the boiler with regard to leaks. Choke the draught if it too high.

The CO² content is too high

Cause Remedy
Excess air when using natural gas and gasoil (propane and butane) Choke the air
Air shortage Check the air supply. Check the flue gas damper
The holes in the gas nozzle are clogged Clean
The fresh air intake is too small Check and enlarge
The flame is not burning straight because the burner head is out of position Check the burner head and readjust

The basics should be checked first:

  • Are all the oil valves open?
  • Are the fuses in order and the current switched on, polarity correct etc?
  • Are the external controls calling?
  • Is the air supply and flue clear and sized/positioned correctly?

Burner fails to start

Burner locks out, despite flame establishment

Cause Remedy
Flame instability - incorrect head settings - Check nozzle to burner head dimensions and electrode position
  - Low oil pressures - check oil pressure
  - Excess air - check and adjust air damper
Photo cell not seeing light - check photo cell is clean and unobstructed
Photo cell failed - Confirm by replacement
Control faulty - confirm by replacement

Burner locks out with no flame established

Cause Remedy
False light Check photo cell is not seeing ambient light
  Check HT leads, spark electrodes condition and position (not arcing other than at electrode gap)
No spark Check supply to ignition transformer from control box
  Replace transformer or control box if necessary
  Check leads, electrodes condition and position
No oil Check oil supply to burner - check pump is no air-locked
No oil at nozzle Check of operation of magnetic valve
  Photo cell seeing light or giving false signal.

Burner fails to start after normal operation

Burner locks out - lamp not lit

Cause Remedy
Fuse blown Check & replace if necessary. Check reason for failure and resolve before reinstating.
Appliance stat has not reset Adjust thermostat
Overheat device has operated Reset overheat device. Find reason for operation & rectify
Control relay or photo cell defective Check by replacement

Motor runs - burner runs to lockout

Cause Remedy
No oil being delivered Check tank, oil lines, fire valve, pump pressure and nozzle condition
Excessive flue draught Rectify
No spark Check ignition transformer, electrode gap and ceramics

Delayed ignition, burner starts violently

Burner pulsates on start-up - only with hot flue

Cause Remedy
Excessive draught Re-commission burner

Burner pulsates on start-up

Cause Remedy
Nozzle partly blocked Replace nozzle
Oil pressure too low Check and re-commission
Flue blocked or damaged Check and rectify
Fan slipping on shaft Check and retighten
Pump coupling loose or worn Check and replace

Burner starts violently (delayed ignition)

Cause Remedy
Poor spark Check transformer voltage input
  Replace transformer
  check electrode adjustment and condition
  check HT leads for damage and disconnection
